Once the dog of the Chinese emporers, the words "shih tzu" mean "lion dog" in Chinese, and they think they're about that size! During the Chinese Revolution the Shih Tzu was almost wiped out, with only 7 males and 7 females being saved. All the Shih Tzus alive today can trace their roots back to one of those dogs.
